Employee Spotlight: Shadiah Garwell

Meet Shadiah Garwell, a member of the creative team here at Musictoday!

Shadiah is a senior visual designer. She has a bachelor’s of fine arts and a Communication Arts degree from VCU with a focus on illustration. “I do a lot of store designs and builds. I make banners and email marketing campaigns. I also work with Robbie [creative director] on process and best practices. Mostly, I just make things pretty.”

What is your favorite thing about working at Musictoday?

“Something I love about working here is that I get to discover new music. We do a lot of pre-orders for bands that I have never heard of. If you’ve never heard of someone before, there are too many ways a design can go. The creative can be too poppy or too masculine if you are designing blind, so it helps to listen to their music. Like A Tribe Called Quest – I had never listened to them before, but when we got their store, I spent a solid two weeks listening to them! I couldn’t turn it off.”

Is there a particular client you enjoy working on?

“Dave Matthews Band is one of my favorite clients. He has such a large following and has such a pull to the history of the company. It’s fun to be a small part of something that supports their tour and music. A lot of people will see the work too, which is exciting.”

What kind of music do you like to listen to?

“I do a lot of genre hopping. I like indie-infused electronic music like Sylvan Esso. I also like Radiohead because there are a lot of different layers to their sound. Every time you listen to a song it’s different; you pick up on something new. If I’m in more of an emo mood I’ll listen to Nirvana. A lot of the time while I’m working though, I’ll listen to movie soundtracks – Hans Zimmer is one of my all-time favorite composers.”

What was your first concert?

“My first pop/rock concert was Christina Aguilera with the Baha Men, who did “Who Let the Dogs Out,” and the Barenaked Ladies when I was in 5th grade. I think I fell asleep, it was past my bedtime.”

In her free time Shadiah enjoys walking her three year-old labradoodle named Albus (after Dumbledore from Harry Potter). She also enjoys sketching. “It’s a good release, like a form of meditation.” Sometimes she shares her sketches on Instagram (@shadiahink).

Thank you for your time, Shadiah! Stay tuned for another employee spotlight!
