State by state listing of New Year's shows

Now that you have been fattening yourself up at countless holiday bashes, we know you will need to work some of that off on New Year's Eve by dancing to your favorite band. Below is a selective list of bands planning end-of-the-year blowouts. If you haven't made plans yet, you can also check out our state by state listing of New Year's shows.

3 Doors Down (Houston, TX) - These hitmakers are hoping that a great New Year's show will ensure that their surprise success in 2000 continues into 2001.

Barenaked Ladies (Boston, MA) - Barenaked Ladies should keep the denizens of Boston warm during the cold early hours of 2001 with their quirky power pop ditties and mega-hits.

Blink-182/Weezer (San Diego, CA) - This should be one of our nation's best New Year's concerts, as long as the music geeks coming for Weezer and the neo-punks worshipping blink-182 don't get into a massive brawl.

Big Star/The Posies (New Orleans, LA) - The highly influential Big Star should keep pop-rockers in New Orleans very happy. As an added bonus for those interested in seeing ghosts of Christmas past, another reunited, legendary pop band, the Posies, will be opening. BUY TICKETS

Buena Vista Social Club Presents (New York, NY) - The end of a three-night Beacon Theatre stand for the Cuban stars. Ibrahim Ferrer, Ruben Gonzalez, and Omara Portuondo will be the evening's headliners.

Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade (San Francisco, CA) - The Primus mastermind's new side project has been getting rave reviews for its wild, jamming shows (which have included complete renditions of Pink Floyd's Animals album).

Cooly's Hot Box (Orlando, FL) - Funky grooves from this well-kept New York secret.

Dark Star Orchestra (Chicago, IL) - Hmm, wonder if they'll perform one of the Grateful Dead's past New Year's shows.

Deep Banana Blackout (Bridgeport, CT) -Judging from the recently released Rowdy Duty, which documents a long 1998 gig by DBB, Connecticut (the band's home state) should be a funky place to be December 31.

Derek Trucks Band (Charlotte, NC) - Guitar pyrotechnics from this second generation Allman Brother should keep Charlotte up all night. BUY TICKETS

Destiny's Child (Los Angeles, CA) - One of the hottest hit making bands around celebrates another successful year. Perfect for them to sing their Charlie's Angels tune in the City of Lost Angels.

Donna The Buffalo (Tampa, FL) - The Buffalo delivers a hodge-podge of fun styles—including bluegrass, reggae, rock, folk, and more—to help keep Tampa's party going all night.

Disco Biscuits (Worcester, MA) - The scenesters who can't make it out to Portland for the Cheese will probably flood Worcester to party in style with the Disco Biscuits, instead. The Biscuits are slated to play three sets, so trance and funk yourself out for a few hours, then walk out of the Palladium and say hello to a new year.

Flaming Lips (Chicago, IL) - Seeing this show almost guarantees that you will have a big, fat pair of Flaming Lips to kiss come midnight. The perfect psychedelic soundtrack to the start of what should be a pretty wacky year.

Galactic (San Francisco, CA) - If more old school is what you want, then head to the Warfield for the classic funk of this group of veteran players. Galactic has more bounce per ounce and that says a lot for a group playing in California on New Year's Eve!

Groove Collective (New York, NY) - Conscious hip-hop meets jam band style funk when Groove Collective takes the stage. Whether they bring their core eight or the full ten members of the group, people will be in for a night full of fusion progressive music designed for dance.

Guided By Voices (Carrboro, NC) - If you plan on drinking lots of champagne December 31, you should do it to the booze-soaked pop songs of Ohio's GBV. BUY TICKETS

Guns N' Roses (Las Vegas, NV) - The most anticipated show of 2001 happens after the ball drops, when the revamped GNR line-up makes its debut.

Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Code Talkers (Asheville, NC)
