Nirvana Reunites, Fills Hole with Love
Buzz Date: April 1, 2000

Shocking most of the world, the remaining members of Nirvana—Crist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Pat Smear—have announced that they will reform for a short stadium tour in July and August. Most surprising is who they have tapped to take leader Kurt Cobain's place on guitar and lead vocals—none other than his widow, Courtney Love. At a news conference, the group said that the tour will honor the memory of Cobain, their fallen comrade, who committed suicide in 1994. By playing stadiums, they intend to "pay tribute to Kurt and all he believed was important to rock 'n roll." The jaunt kicks off on July 4 with a blow-out at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, and ends on August 15 at Seattle's new Safeco Field. The August 15 finale will take place immediately after a game between the Seattle Mariners and the Kansas City Royals.

Although Love and her late husband's bandmates are known to have feuded quite a bit in the past, drummer Dave Grohl says that there was never any doubt that Love would join the group. "Who else could do it?" Grohl rhetorically asked. "We talked for a while about getting that kid from Silverchair to fill in, but when Courtney's movie schedule fell into place and we saw she would be available, we said, 'Hell yes!'" Along with rockers from the Nirvana songbook, the quartet also plans to perform some music from Hole's 1994 album, Live Through This. "I stole most of those riffs and lyrics from Kurt anyway," said Love during the recent conference. Bassist Novoselic added, "The main question was whether we could convince Pat Smear to come back out with us. I mean, without Pat, what's the point of Nirvana at all?" Luckily, Smear was able to rearrange his busy schedule to join his old mates for the excursion.
As for Grohl's plans concerning the Foo Fighters, the drummer said, "Ahh, no one gives a f*ck about my music anyway. Foo Fighters is so yesterday, while this tour is here and now. Quit living in the past."
