Frank Black: Hello! Welcome to our chat. Frank is at his email box answering your questions. Thank you for joining us and stay tuned for more with Frank. Here are some responses. There is a stack here...I'll try to get to them all...also, I'll try to get a lil back n forth happening as some of you are at your stations as I write this. also, forgive typos. Don't got time to fix em all.
Matt Mihevc: If you had to describe your time with the Pixies using only 3 words, what would those 3 be?
Frank Black: that was then
Jeremy: What's it like to play with Joey Santiago again, and to have David Lovering opening up for you with his magic? Is it kind of cool to have the old gang back?
Frank Black: Great to play with Joey...Lovering will be doing west coast tour in the spring.
Erik in Baltimore: Will any singles be released for Dog in the Sand besides Robert Onion?
Frank Black: st francis dam disaster...SSMVGD as a single? You're too kind.
Matt Mihevic: Is there a place you go for inspiration when writing songs? Maybe a special place that means a lot to you? Just wondering cos the imagery on Teenager of the year is amazing.
Frank Black: During toty I did go up to the peaks of the Santa Monica mountains for some writing sessions...i hike there a lot now.
Angus: Are you particularly impressed with any recent talent? If so, who do you find most impressive and why?
Frank Black: Yeah, I saw some art students play at the open mic we did in Providence a few weeks ago...what were they called? They will probably never put out a record. They probably already broke up.
Russell Richardson: Is "The Swimmer" based on actual events or made up?
Frank Black: Actual events of course. The stuff is real man!
Powellmusic: We loved your show at Met Cafe, Providence, RI with Jimmy Jack Stark. Are you coming back soon or do you have any new plans in the future? Is there gonna be a Pixies live show ever out on DVD?
Frank Black: Thanks for coming. We come to Boston in April. Pixies on DVD? Dunno.
Mindbender: You have been in the music biz for some time now. Do you have any advice for up and coming bands regarding the music industry side of things? Contracts, etc?
Frank Black: I been in this bizness for over 40 years...1. Get the money. 2. don't forget to get the money. 3. remember, don't forget to get the money.
Russell Richardson: Is there any chance of Reeves Gabrels making a cameo on a Catholics record?
Frank Black: Well, Reeves does live in L.A. now. And he ain't playing with the dukester right now...we shall see...
PalaceofBrine: What brought the presence of Pixies songs in your recent live performances? Can we expect live versions of other Pixies songs in the future?
Frank Black: Well, we don't do set lists. I'll take your request into consideration with the rest of the Catholics.
Bruno from Nashville: Have you done any music videos since you officially became "Frank Black and The Catholics?" The last one I saw were "Hang on to Your Ego" and "Los Angeles."
Frank Black: We did a low budget for Robert Onion in Germany a couple of months ago. You will probably never see it. Do they still show videos over there? I watch that jackass guy sometimes.
Julien: How would you describe in a few words the main changes between the Pixies songs and Frank Black songs?
Frank Black: Pixy song are written by Black Francis and Frank Black song are written by Anne Frank. I hope I didn't offend by invoking the holy name of Anne...got her on the brain..see they invoked the holy on Mr. Show brilliantly. U watch that? I tape em all with my TIVO.
Weezil Weezil: Are you an evolutionist or religious person and do you use evolution as a source for inspiration?
Frank Black: I'd be interested to hear your theories...
Bruno from Nashville: What is your all-time favorite guitar rock record?
Frank Black:It depends on what your definition of guitar rock album is...
Laurent Beausser: Are you going to do another U.S. tour when you get back from Europe? And I'll be seeing you tomorrow in Virginia.
Frank Black: Starts in April.
Babatte Frederick: Its your sidewalk surfin' buddy from Philly. Are there any current musicians that really stand out in your opinin?
Frank Black: I like The Bennies. I hope you dug the schwa book.
Olivier Guinard: Now that Eric Drew Feldman is back in the picture, is there any chance you will do a more-than-two-tracks-not-that-there-is-anything-wrong-with-that album in the near future?
Frank Black: JAMAS!
Kevin: Why did you cancel a large portion of your last tour?
Frank Black: Broke mah toe in Chico
Zojomojo: Are you going to do a national tour and come out west?
Frank Black: Si si si senor.
Ryan Waits: Love the new album! Some of your later material has obviously been influenced by VonDanikan and Sitchen, what are some of your other favorites?
Frank Black: I like that emeril BAM!
Bill Eagle: Long time fan...I have seen you in concert about 5 times now. The 6th time will be this Thursday in DC. I, as well as all of my friends love your music. Keep on rocking man...By the way, what ever happened to Johnny Polonski?
Frank Black: See u in ARLINGTON.
dhatten1: Can you tell me about the song, Western Star? A little insight, where were you when you wrote it?
Frank Black: in my wife's office.
Laurent: For your part Frank, who of Reeves Gabrel and Rich Gilbert is better guitarist?
Frank Black: Dunno. The turkey toss is gonna be at the next county fair. Love fried pepper ring. Jus like the onion ring cept they got peppers in em.
Rob: Do you have anything in mind for the next Catholics album? Any favorite places to play live?
Frank Black: turn up dee bass itall mazimum vol yoom! At dee WOW hall in dee eugene of dat pacifica!
Rob: Do you have any suggestions for songwriting? What is your process?
Frank Black: Boogie till you puke. Beginning.
MONKEYINATURBAN: Do you shave your own head and if so how often?
Frank Black: I use a process called mentalism. David Lovering learned me.
Peter Whyte: Do the guys in the band ever ask you what the songs are about that you have written?
Frank Black: Never.
Russell Richardson: I am told that you're credited with guest vocals on the Wallflowers' "Breach" album, but I have yet to hear it. How did that come about--did you know the band prior to this, or did they make an offer out of the blue?
Frank Black: The Flours call me on a special blue phone that I have. They have a special phone that I call them on. I don't know what color it is.
Eric Boa: Ever regretted not seeing Hailey's Comet?
Frank Black: Sometimes. Shit. Now you got me all choked up.
Bjorn Minx: What is "Humboldt County Massacre" about?
Frank Black: Ponder the title. Therein lies the answer my son.
bg: How many songs have you rehearsed for this tour? Does the return of Eric Drew have an influence on the songs you will play live?
Frank Black: 54. Drew Feldman is a very heavy cat to be playing with.
Laurent: Of the about 250 songs you wrote in your life, which ones are you most proud of, or which one do you prefer?
Frank Black: I prefer to not prefer.
Thatcher Zembo: Do you have any favorite producers?
Frank Black: I am liking very much Zee Bilkly Wilder. Besides yourself, of course.
John Edwards: I like the new set of songs, best since teenager. Any chance of more Canadian dates?
Frank Black: There is always a chance for more Canadian dates. See you then. Three nights in Toronto in April.
Res Life 162: A lot of your past work seems very sci-fi influenced. What things influence you the most now in your work? Also are you gonna play Chicago this year?
Frank Black: Science fact. Yeah, we goin ta chi town.
Laurent: Is "Brakish Boy" based on real facts? If so, what's the story?
Frank Black: It is a true story my friend. Please. Listen or read...how you say...zee text.
Julien: Are you married? Do you have children and do the members of your family appreciate your music?
Frank Black: I am. My family likes but prefers Mr. Cugat.
Catia Oliveira: I love "tame." What was the inspiration? Is the album, Frank Black (1993), a goodbye to the Pixies?
Frank Black: Cinderella. And no, Frank Black 1993 is just an album.
Frank Black:There is more to come! Come back tomorrow for more questions and answers. We are going to post them all!
Thatcher Zembo: Duckingham Palace. Ever been there?
Frank Black: I think you mean Buckingham Palace my dear boy. I have taken tea with her majesty thrice.
Matt Mihevc: One last question, What's in your cd player right now? Do you have a favorite cd?
Frank Black: Vu. I am liking this man called Cugat. Hi is soo crazy!
Derek: You seem to be a very cultural song writer, naming different geographical places and stuff. Do you do a lot of site seeing when you tour and if so, do those places give you different moods to write in? Also, how do you go about choosing songs to cover?
Frank Black: Derek...All you need is love. And a decent copy of the White Album. I buy albums in order to choose songs to cover.
Russell Richardson: I recently read somewhere that you did soundtrack work for an upcoming film, possibly with Joey Santiago. Is that accurate, and if so, what movie?
Frank Black: Yes, a particularly shitty flick. Oh they're all so shitty...called...oh go see something else. With any luck, there will be a new rocket man movie. The kids one, not that Disney shit.
Thatcher Zembo: Have you been listening to any new music?
Frank Black: Yeah, I bought a Frank Sinatra cd the other day.
Catia Oliveira: I heard today in television that there is a possibility of the Pixies getting back together? Its true?
Frank Black: Se Triste. No? I am sorry for zis rumour. It is bullshit!
Julien: In which country do you think you have the more fans (you declare to French magazines that it is in France, but it was French magazines, so...) and do you have a favorite country to play?
Frank Black: We love the France!
Julien: Parlez-vous un peu le francais? I remember your french sentance before singing Headache during the Black sessions in Paris. "Je voudrais dedicacer la prochaine chanson a mon ami Better qui..." Did you learn it just before or did you improvise?
Frank Black: I am making very bad French...I am sorry for it!
Julien: Why don't you publish a live CD since you like your sound so much?
Frank Black: You are brilliant, my friend! You must come to be my, how you say....manager!
Mandi Apple: Just wanted to ask you if you mind that me and my friends call you The Big Baby Man, as you don't have much hair and you scream a lot?
Frank Black: Not at all. Actually, we in the van have been calling you The Crabapple.
Mandi Apple: Oooh (lifts handbag..ow!) Touche Mr. Black!! And very well said. Hahahahaha. Especially on Monday mornings at 7 a.m.
Frank Black: Thanks Crabby (just kidding!)
Jeremy W: Is there any chance that you'll swing through Canada this year? I know a lot of people where I live (Winnipeg, Neil Young's hometown) would love to see you play and pack a venue!
Frank Black: Oh Zee Neil Young. He is fantasteek! I am loving to come to his hometown. I love you. Please! Yes. You are too much kind.
Powellmusic: When you come to Boston in April, can you help get some new local talent on the show, maybe pull some strings?
Frank Black: For you my friend...10 Dollars USA! Eh? I think this is the best deal you can find any place, yeas?
Babatte Frederick:I really like the steel guitar you've added. What brought you and Rich to experiment with it?
Frank Black: Well, it's just that Rich plays it...know what I mean?
Ryan Waits: Is Fiddle Riddle from TOTY about the three stooges?
Frank Black: No! No! No! The 3 Reelers! Zis iss zee one which tell the story of thees brothers, yes?
Rolfius Eisenfellerhofferstein: I am thinking of moving to Spain and living there forever; please rate this idea on a scale of 1-10. Also, whatever happened to pong? (Be creative. There is no right or wrong answer.)
Frank Black: Creo que es un idea bien chevere! Nos vemos alla! Creo que 10 es el numero que es su vida! No me entiende su otra questione.
Julien: Aren't you fed up with all these people who consider you as the "Pixie" ghost? Again, French magazine Rock & Folk called your article "Death to the Pixies"! Stop! For me, you are such a good continuation of this band!
Frank Black: Thank you Julien. The press will say what they say. We must try to forgive them.
Arsene Lupin: The acrostics in "Robert Onion", "Speedy Mary", and "Valley of our Hope" are very interesting. Is there other acrostics in other songs?
Frank Black: Maybe.
Ratbert99x: Do you tune your A string up to B for "Blast Off?" Have you used any other "rare" tunings other than drop D or a capo?
Frank Black: Eagle eye. Secret.
Franny: What's your favorite Bradbury story? "Colonel Stonesteel's Genuine Home-made Truly Egyptian Mummy" is probably my fave.
Frank Black: The one about making a wish on a falling star.
Franny: Any plans to collaborate with TMBG again?
Frank Black: Hope so.
Franny: Do you think you'll play in Montana again soon or was Bozeman a pain in the ass? P.S. We bought you a drink at the restaurant before the show.
Frank Black: Love Bozeman. Thanks for the drink.
Karpidistu: Did Samuel Beckett really want to go to Mars on a solar sail? Can you give us any insight into "Blast Off"? Also, how did you hook up with Scott and Dave from Miracle Legion?
Frank Black: You already have the insight. Scott and Dave have always been with me.
Wade: Where do you like to hang out in Amsterdam?
Frank Black: At the movies.
Ratbert99x: Do you like the cable TV show, Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
Frank Black: Y.
Peter Whyte: I'm writing from Northern Michigan, and I was just wondering if you've ever been up here.
Frank Black: Not yet. Where should we play?
Russell: Rocket man was on the tube yesterday. My wife and son watched it while I was at the laundromat. Never saw it, but she likes it. "Where is my mind" played a significant role in fight club — what did you think of that film?
Frank Black: I like. I like.
Russell: I've heard your music pop up in various movies and I often wonder if you were asked for approval or if someone else makes those decisions on your behalf.
Frank Black: Frank always make a big thing for this movie showbiz. So many shitty films, yes? Maurice where are u?
Björno: Hey Frank, thanx a lot for your answers, wow, that was quick! The Humboldt County massacre was a stupid one, right!
Frank Black: No question is stupid, my friend. I make little joke, yes?
Björno: I've heard from several artists now that the German audience is quite unique in the sense of not filling up the first rows. Does that happen in other countries as well and do you notice any differences among different audiences in the world? Don't mean to hear good stuff about Germany and bad about other's, just what you really think about. I can imagine that the Mediterranean folks for example are slightly more enthusiastic...
Frank Black: I love all the people every city! I love you you, yes? I am lusting for the cold night air and the smell of stale beer! I love zis audiences every place, yes? I sing from zee stage and iss like making love to beautiful woman, yes?
Brannon: While listening to the new album, on several songs I noticed references to chemicals and what I perceived as drug related references...are these just the crazed inferences of an LSD enthusiast?
Frank Black: No just references.
Brannon: Also, while listening to teenager a while back, I thought I might have solved the fiddle riddle...the "face" on which man stands is that of the earth, but he abuses his gift and winds up extinct. But the machines he created live on and live equally futile lives...am I right?
Frank Black: You ah smaht. A sci fi story I read somewhere.
Hatcat: Do you like computers? If so, what type of computer do you have?
Frank Black: Computers... I love you! I love a good mac in the morning.
Hatcat: Can you tell me how you feel about napster and other electronic mechanisms that spread music freely - not the way fat cats and national industry scripters command them to be deseminated. Thanks for awesome music over the years - a sweet evolution!
Frank Black: Dunno. Still waiting to see what'll happen.
Rob: I'm in philadelphia and I've been dying to see you guys on tour forever, but all of your shows anywhere close are at locations with age restrictions of 18 or 21 that I can't get into, since I'm only 16. Any chance that could change next time around?
Frank Black: Yeah, next time around you'll be 17. One more year to go!
Rob: Also, I noticed the title track from dog in the sand is based from surf epic, from the hang on to your ego single, I love it! What gave you the idea to use it?
Frank Black: It was finally done. At least that part of it. Thanx for noticing.
Mavis Trickle: Why two-track?
Frank Black: We have seen the light.
Mavis Trickle: What's wrong with four, or even eight?
Frank Black: Nothing is wrong.
Mavis Trickle: Have you ever been to Swindon, or Montana?
Frank Black: Been to MT... Where's Swindon?
Mavis Trickle: Can you write three words in a foreign language?
Frank Black: Aglio e olio.
Mavis Trickle: There are, so I say, three degrees of separation from Frank Black to George W. Bush. What are they?
Frank Black: You seem to know...
Mavis Trickle: Ever been caught doing something embarrassing in public?
Frank Black: Shitting on the trail.
Mavis Trickle: If you could date anyone in history, who would it be?
Frank Black: Cleopatra. My wife is reincarnated from her...
Mavis Trickle: Why aren't you playing Bristol (UK) this time, and are you aware of the big mix-up between Frank Black and Francis Black (the folk singer) that there's been? The woman at the ticket office was most fed up.
Frank Black: I'm sure she'll get over it. Either that or she'll hang herself.
D. Cady: Hey, thanks for all the great music. My friends and I agree that we love the older pixies tunes and still love listening to all of it, but we also agree that your work since then has been even better. With a rare opportunity to "speak" to you, we wanted to know a few things.... What's your favorite beer?
Frank Black: Thank you for the compliment. Beer... A cold Japanese one with salty Japanese food.
D. Cady: The style of recording on these albums (with the Catholics) has a really honest straightforward feel that some people just can't appreciate. I think that your songwriting and playing is perfectly emphasized with your recent recording techniques and shows a real understanding of the total concept of the music. How do you feel about technology in music and recording today?
Frank Black: Technology is fine I guess. There are no rules.
D. Cady: How can I keep MacGrudis' monsta-dog (Elwood) out of my trash cans?
Frank Black: You can't keep a dog out of a trash can.
D. Cady: Do your wacky timing changes throw your rhythm section off sometimes when learning the new songs you write?
Frank Black: Nothing intimidates the rhythm section.
D. Cady: Ever actually seen a UFO?
Frank Black: 2 UFOs.
D. Cady: Any plans to ever release a live video from one of your shows on VHS or DVD? Maybe an enhanced CD of some sort? Why don't you go by black Francis any more? Can you come to do some shows in Texas/Houston a bit more often? We never miss a show (best there is) and it's been three long years since the incredible show at Fitzgerald's last time. I'm getting a rare chance to see you guys in Leiden, net on march 23rd by chance (vacation in Amsterdam, but leaving the night you play there, so we'll be catching the Leiden show the night before...my wife and I are celebrating our 10th anniv. And just happens to be when you're there) anyway, most of my friends (die hard fans since the early days of your career) can't make that trip and want to know when you might be back in Houston again....so? What are the post euro-tour plans?
Frank Black: I thought you were in Amsterdam, buddy. And we just played Houston last summer. Check the paper there a little more, buddy.
John Byrnes: How do you feel about free music over the internet?
Frank Black: No feeling yet. I'm not a very touchy feely person.
John Byrnes: You've referred a lot to outer space, (many times) aliens (hardly at all) and UFO's ( a few times) in your music... Was wondering if this was an interest of yours - if you've really had an "encounter" or is it just a great subject for lyrics?
Frank Black: Take heed my advice, beware your tracking device
Ivar Jonsson: Your new album is amazing. I'm glad to see that Feldman and Santiago are back and I hope that you finally find the commercial success that you deserve. You've earned it, you genius you!
Frank Black: thank you kindly.
Ivar Jonsson: What are your political views? Of course it is dangerous to over interpret lyrics to pop songs, but 'freedom rock' gives me the impression that you are an individualist and that you believe in personal freedom.
Frank Black: I always vote indy. Went Nader in November. I believe in the great land of Califa.
Björno: First of all, Robert onion is great!! It is the only song I know from the upcoming album (it was on a compilation of visions, the German music magazine). Can't wait to hear the rest! Now, question(s): in some of your songs you sing about quite personal experiences or thoughts you have (I believe "I gotta move" is one of them). When you perform those songs abroad, are you annoyed if the audience starts or continues to mosh or jump wildly around while you are singing of some may be even sad experience you made? Or do just excuse that with the fact that foreign audiences might not fully understand all of your lyrics?
Frank Black: Is not necessary to understand the meaning. The meaning will eventually make itself known.
Björno: Is it true that, when on tour, you drive the van yourself? Even abroad? Having heard that you like speed, how do you like driving on German autobahns?
Frank Black: We do a lot of driving yes. The autonahn is a bit crowded these days. Not so fast. 20k bis rasthof.
Björno: What are "thalassocracy" and "pure denizen of the citizens band" about?
Frank Black: So you figured out that there both about JFK, huh?
Björno: OK Frank, those are my questions, I am looking forward to your European tour. Good luck for the future
Frank Black: Thanks. I am looking for to Germany. Good beer. Good food. I feel short when I am there. See you then b.
Laurent Beausser: Why did you decide to rename surf epic into dog in the sand and to make it appear in your new dog in the sand LP?
Frank Black: Surf epic plus time minus bullshit times one leg is both the same equals sand in the dog.
Laurent Beausser: Is the fact that you play more and more pixies songs and that you play with Joey more often a simple fact or a sign ? Well hope you'll answer my question
Frank Black: A sign o the times my friend a sign o the times.
Jay Schwartzenburg: Assuming Ole Mulholland & St Francis dam disaster are about the same incident....
Frank Black: They are not.
Jay Schwartzenburg: Hmmm.. How do I phrase this question... It seems like you have a different perspective on each song. St Francis dam disaster seems a bit more compassionate to MR. Mulholland and definitely captures the power of the water.... Am I way off? I love both songs. My question would be: do you feel differently about the St. Francis dam disaster now than you did when you wrote Ole Mulholland?
Frank Black: Well, I guess it just ain't like that for me. I guess I don't understand your query...
Marc: The acrostics in "Robert onion", "speedy Mary" and "valley of our hope" are very interesting. Are there other acrostics in other songs?
Frank Black: Maybe
Marc: Have you recorded a studio version of the excellent "21 reasons"
Frank Black: One does exist
Marc: Is there a reason that you play only pixies songs of "Surfer Rosa" and "Doolittle" and none of Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde in this tour?
Frank Black: Not really
Tara: How is your voice — I read somewhere you had lost it and your gig tonight was cancelled.
Frank Black: Yup. Sorry balty. It happens sometime. We'll be back in April. DC, too.
W.C.: I would like to ask why did you pick the name "Frank Black"?
Frank Black: I inherited the name.
W.C.: And which musician would you most enjoy playing with
Frank Black: I would like to play very much with the Mozart. He is fantastic one! Yes!
Jeremy Donovan: Will you be doing a wider tour this summer going to say...I don't know... Maybe Ottawa again? Last time you were there, Scott mentioned something about wanting to do a tour of all of Canada including where I am, the east coast...new Brunswick...will you be doing this at any time?
Frank Black: We shall see.
BG: You always use telecaster... Is there any particular reason (I play on a telecaster too maybe cos of you)
Frank Black: The telecaster... It is simply the best one!
Cange31490: How is your voice doing? Please come back to Baltimore soon.
Frank Black: I'll know tomorrow. I think it's better. Thanks for asking.
Amit: I still think that "Trompe Le Monde" is the best album ever made. My favorite work of you is from "Teenager Of The Year" and I was so glad when I heard that you're working with Eric Drew Feldman again. Are all the rumors about a possible Pixies reunion true or just rumors?
Frank Black: no es la verdad.
Amit: Why won't you come with the Catholics to Israel? It's a great country and you have a lot of fans here! The Dead Sea will make you float!
Frank Black: nos vemos.
Amit: What songs are going to be in the new 4AD Pixies B-sides collection?
Frank Black: Why the bsides of course!
Amit: Will there be alot of rare stuff like the early cover for "Hang on to your ego" or just the b-sides from the singles?
Frank Black: Pixies bsides!
George Hughes: Why have you abandoned Pittsburgh, Frank Black? Isn't either Metropol or Club Laga, two nice Pitt. clubs, good enough for you? Would threats of physical violence, or just a courteous 'please' convince you to swing by and bust out a few tunes for us beer-swilling hillbillies?
Frank Black: Sorry about abandoning you Pittsburgh. It's just that we don't like you. JUST KIDDING! We will come soon. I promise. Had to cancel last time cuz of van trouble and a severe thunderstorm. Sorry about that.
Amit: Did u like Brian Wilson's comeback album "Imagination"?
Frank Black: Didn't hear it.
Amit: What did u like better? "The Sixth Sense" or "Unbreakable"? Did u hear "I've been tired" in "Unbreakable"? I thought that a perfect song for this perfect movie would have been "Man of steel"...
Frank Black: Didn't see un... See you soon I hope.
Oliver Hall: Forgot to mention in previous email that I bet you & Catholics could really tear up "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" by Linda Ronstadt. May sound funny now, but I'd bet cash money it'd be good.
Frank Black: AOK
Brennan in Nashville: You are still playing in Charlottesville, VA, tomorrow night, right? I'm driving all the way from Nashville, and I heard rumors you had cancelled some shows.
Frank Black: Monday night!
Eric Griffin: Do you have any plans to come to OH or the Great Lakes Region in general?? I will come to any shows within a days drive!
Frank Black: Yes, but only generally. You are too kind.
